Emily M. Buehler, PhD

​​​Dr. Emily Buehler is an assistant professor of Interpersonal Communication and Social Media in the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue. She is a social scientist whose research sits at the intersection of interpersonal communication and computer-mediated communication. She studies how people communicate to seek, provide, and receive social support through personal and social media.

Dr. Buehler's research has appeared in a variety of academic journals, including Communication Monographs, Social Media+Society, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Computers in Human Behavior. Her latest work examines the joint influence of the perceived affordances of communication technologies and relational characteristics on support-seeking messages.

 

An award-winning teacher, Dr. Buehler teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on interpersonal communication, communication in relationships, and personal relationships and technology. She spends time every summer volunteering with the HOBY leadership program, where she helps high school students identify specific ways to channel their passions to enact positive social change in their communities.
